Whisk[e]y Review/ Michter's Small Batch US 1 Bourbon
If you like Bourbon, and the classic notes that come from it then good, Michter’s Small batch Bourbon will without certainty, deliver.
Before we dive into the flavour profile, let’s talk about who Michter’s Distillery is. Founded in 1753 and originally known as Shenk’s, named after the founder John Shenk, the distillery was making whiskey primarily made from Rye grains in the Blue Mountains of Pennsylvania. Today, Michter’s creates a host of different whiskey products ranging from Rye’s, through 10 year aged (even smaller) small batch Bourbon’s.
Today we are talking about one Bourbon of theirs in specific, the Michter’s Small Batch US 1 Kentucky Strait Bourbon Whiskey. Sourced from Brown Forman, Michter’s will select only 20 barrels at a time, making it truly a small batch Bourbon.
Coming in a 45.7% ABV (Alcohol by volume), the Small Batch presents most of the similar notes otherwise found in a great deal of Kentucky Bourbons. Here are MY tasting notes.
On The Nose:
Right as I pull the glass to my nose, I can already smell a bold, but very sweet caramel and vanilla. Going back a few more times, a strong butterscotch flavour is visible as well as a light but dark oak tannin in the very back.
The Taste:
The first sip is bold and rich with an elongated peppery finish. The first flavour that appeared from my taste buds was a dark fruit with a sweetness carried through. Going back on the second sip, the Bourbon is bright, but not, sharp. Continued still is that quite long-lasting peppery back end.
Overall, I think the Michter’s Small batch Bourbon is a good one, but my favourite? No, although I will give credit where credit is due, and I think for where this Bourbon sits on the shelf, it definitely has the characters to stand up to its competition. If you like a sweet Bourbon with rich flavours of Caramel and butterscotch, but don’t mind a little pepper at the back of your throat, then you should definitely give this one a shot.
