The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
An Electric Pickup truck build by the All-Tough All-the-time, FORD.
That is right, with all the other electric vehicles being released, a major auto manufacture has finally released a pickup truck! Now, some of you might be saying “But Jon, Tesla has the Cybertruck”, but guess what? Ain’t nobody got a confirmed release date, and until I see them being shipped to customers, I’m calling it bull.
Let’s get into why Ford calls this truck the F-150 Lightning. As you’ve probably guessed by now, the F-150 Lightning will be Fords first all-electric pickup truck. The Lightning will be powered by Dual In-board motors meaning the Lightning will only be available in 4x4. The Dual-motors will have two options; as standard the Lightning will have 426hp and 775 lb.-ft of torque (the most ever for the F-150 lineup) but, if you want a little more juice, the Extended-range option will have 563hp with the same 775 lb.-ft of torque. Combined, the motors and the 4x4 will move the F-150 Lightning from 0-100km/h within the mid four-seconds and have a total towing capacity of 10,000-pounds.
The power is all well and good, but how far can the F-150 Lightning actually bring you on one charge? It will depend on what motor option you choose but, as standard, the Lightning will have a Lithium-ion battery capable of an EPA-estimate of 370-kilometres. Charge time will vary, but for a full charge at home with Fords 80-Amp charger it will get a charge from 15%-100% in 10-hours. Should you have a 150 Kw DC fast charger, the standard Lightning will charge from 15%-80% in just 44-minutes.
If you want an upgrade, Ford offers the Extended-range battery option on both the XLT, and Lariat trim levels. With the Extended-range battery, the Lightning will be able to travel an EPA-estimated 480-kilometres. For charging, this battery actually performs better under pressure, so with a 150 Kw DC charger, the Extended-range will have a 15%-80% charge time of 41-minutes and, with the 80A charger, you will have 15%-100% in eight hours.
On the exterior, Ford has kept the F-150 Lightning, well, looking like an F-150, and personally, I have no problem with that. At release the F-150 Lightning will only be available in one size. The exterior starts with the SuperCrew cab (only four doors), with a 5.5ft bed and, I know a five and half foot bed doesn’t seem like much, but because this is an electric truck, you gain extra storage space in the front. Speaking of, the “Frunk” on the F-150 Lightning will have 400-litres of cargo space, 400-pounds of payload capability, four power outlets, two USB plugs and a drain so you can either clean it, or use it as a cooler.
Ford has also introduced a host a new tech for the F-150 Lightning. To start, the bed will have Fords Pro Power On-board which gives the option to plug multiple items across outlets in the bed side, as well as a usable interior tailgate for working. Not only can you use it on job sites, but you can also use the outlets in the bed, or the charge plug to bring power to your home should you lose power or to use the battery in your truck during peak periods to keep costs down.
Inside the F-150 Lightning, the tech continues. The Lightning will have a 15.5-inch centre console display, so you have ample screen to view the different options. In front of the driver will sit a 12-inch digital cluster, and on the cluster you will have an exterior shot of the truck as an icon, and different layouts for the different driving mode selected. Other interior features include full 180-degree folding front seats and a folding centre console workspace.
Overall, I think Ford did a pretty bang-up job with the F-150 Lightning. Unfortunately, I would’ve imagined being able to go a longer distance on one charge, especially for a pickup truck, but as time and technology continue, we will see better performance out of the batteries. Should you be interested in purchasing an F-150 Lightning yourself, the price starts at just over $68,000CAD and will be available from the beginning of 2022.
