Omega Speedmaster 50th Anniversary "Silver Snoopy Award"
A relationship between a watch brand and a cartoon character that shall never go forgotten.
The relationship between Omega and Snoopy began back in 1970 when the Apollo 13 crew relied on their trusty Omega speedmaster chronograph’s to coordinate a 14-second fuel burn to make sure they landed in the correct spot when reentering the earth’s atmosphere. Happily, the watch worked as intended when the crew had no digital time recording options, and they were able to make it home safely.

Shortly after the relationship between Snoopy and Omega was born, Omega was awarded the “Silver Snoopy Award” for
keeping the Apollo 13 crew safe. This is an award that is given to people or companies that contribute greatly to the "success of human space flight missions.” Since then, Omega has done a fantastic job at reminding everyone that; A. They were the first watch company to be chosen by Nasa for certified space travel and the first watch company to be worn on the moon. And B. That they received the “Silver Snoopy Award” from the astronauts of Apollo 13.

Maybe now is a good time to tell you about the watch. At the core of it is a fifth generation Omega Speedmaster Chronograph being driven by the; Omega Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 3861. The 3861 movement has improved anti-magnetism, features a silicon balance spring, and is a manually wound with a METAS certified Chronometer. The case is made of stainless steel and can be had at 42mm wide.
As a bonus, and because of the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission, this Silver Snoopy edition features a Snoopy in his space suit and wearing his famous Flying Ace scarf on the running seconds subdial. Along with Snoopy, this is a special color combo with the pure white dial, blue accents and blue ceramic bezel. The magic really appears however, when the watch is flipped around. On the back, through a sapphire crystal, we see a large depiction of the moon and the earth that rotates with the running seconds. But it is when the Chronograph is put into motion that the fun begins. Once you start the chronograph, you will see a little snoopy appear riding a rocket around the far side of the moon, just like the astronauts from the Apollo 13 mission.

Luckily, Omega has made the watch readily available to all consumers who would want one, by not limiting the number of sold units. That being said, unfortunately, there is a waiting list, and based on the secondhand price (over $40,000CAD), it is probably a long wait. When purchased, you receive the Apollo 13 presentation box, a microfiber cleaning cloth, and a magnifying glass to be able to get a closer look at little ol’ Snoopy.

To me, this is easily one of the best watches to come from Omega in regard to the Nasa/Omega relationship. Between the color, and the fun details that Omega has put into the watch, this is one I would definitely have. Not only is there history and a story behind it, but there is also something on the back that only you will get to experience every time you click that start/stop pusher.
