2021 Ford EcoSport

If it seems like I’m writing about a lot of crossovers, it’s because I am. So, here’s another one…

What is there to say about the Ford EcoSport? No really, what is there to say. It’s a small crossover, that offers a small amount of space, not very comfortable, and is slow. Other than it being cheaper than most of its competitors, I don’t think it has much going for it. Yet somehow it sells… In 2019 Ford sold over 4,000 units in Canada, and over 50,000 in the US.

Before you get the wrong idea, let me tell you about the Ford EcoSport, then you can make your own assessment. This year, the Ford EcoSport will be available in four trim levels; S, SE, SES, and Titanium. All of which have varying options but look more or less the same.

On the exterior, the EcoSport is offered in a variety of paint colours, and a choice of two 17” wheel options. Depending on the package chosen, you can also have a black painted roof, spoiler and hood decal (standard on the SES trim package).

On the interior, the EcoSport is quite bleak, and simple, but gets the job done. The seats are big and have little to no bolstering, the back seats are also quite flat and likely uncomfortable for long trips (with the boys!). However, you do get a nice 8” infotainment system with both touch screen capability and buttons! Loaded in the screen is Ford’s Sync3 system and offers Apple car play and Android auto.

Now, the moment you have all been waiting for! Ladies and gentlemen get ready, here are, the engine choices! With the 2021 Ford EcoSport, you have two engine options (and no you can’t have both). The first; a 1-litre (yes, 1-litre) 3cyl turbo engine that makes a grand total of, 123hp and 125 lb-ft of torque. The second; a 2-litre 4cyl naturally aspirated engine that makes, and again, a grand total of, 166hp and 149 lb-ft of torque. Both are mated to the same 6-speed automatic, however, with the 2-litre engine you exclusively get AWD.

Now look, if you are in the market for a crossover and find yourself shopping around, somehow end up at the Ford dealer, then sure, take a look at the EcoSport (you should be there for the Mach-E), but just make sure to do it first, so you don’t have to go back later. Honestly, even if you want to compare prices, the Ford is yes, less than some of the others, but for what you get, I think putting in that extra little bit will really go a long way.

PS. Ford, if you want to let me borrow one, maybe my opinion will change.
