2022 Volkswagen Golf R

The new Golf R, something new? Or something we are already used to?

Before we get into the new Golf R, let’s talk about its predecessors. The first Golf R32 (32 because of the 3.2L VR6 engine), was introduced in 2002 with the MK4 (4th generation). Having only 270hp, it was a quick little bugger, but nothing like todays version. Throughout the years the Golf R went through a few different variations, one of the most important being the 6th generation in 2009, when it went from the R32 to the R. Along with the name change, it also received an engine change from the 3.2L, to the 2.0L turbo motor.

Today, we are presented with the MK8 Golf R. Happily one of two Golf models Canada will be receiving in 2022. With the new Golf R, Volkswagen has made a handful of changes to the drivetrain, but mostly, changes to the look of the Golf.

Under the hood, the Golf R is still present with the 2.0L TSI Turbo engine, but this time putting out 315hp (27 more than the last) and 310 ft-lb’s of torque. Along with the newly added power, Volkswagen has also made changes to the drivetrain. Keeping with the 4Motion AWD system, Volkswagen has updated it with, better differentials capable of sending all 100% of the power to the outside rear wheel. The Golf R will also be available with both a 6-speed manual option, as well as a 7-speed DSG automatic.

Because of the new updates made, the Golf R will also be available with multiple drive modes. From Comfort to Race and a few others in-between, this really gives the driver the best options to choose from, whether they be on the race track, or taking a trip with the family. One of the modes added for this year (how could I not mention it), is the DRIFT mode, that’s right, because the Golf R has the option to send all the power to the rear axles, Volkswagen was able to add a drift mode. I mean, how awesome does that sound? They say it is to only be used on the track, but I’m sure we will see our fair share of Ken Block wannabes crashing into lamp posts.

Moving along to the interior of the Golf R. Volkswagen was able to improve the infotainment so now it will have a digital dash, and a touch screen display. With the Golf R, you also get your fair share of “carbon” panels, Napa leather seats, and less buttons than ever before!

On the exterior, you get the new looks of the 8th generation golf, but with a few extra touches. Firstly, you get a long LED light above the front grill that will aluminate on startup, 19-inch wheels as standard, sunroof (also as standard), and a handful of other little things that let others know you are driving a Golf R.

All in all, I have always had an affection for the Volkswagen Gold R models as it was always the most gentlemen like of its competitors. Because of its classic German engineering, you know that everything will work as intended, and It will work well. This generation does have a bit of that “catered to the older generation” look but, it will certainly still have a presence when you pull up to your local grocery store. That being said, I wish Volkswagen would keep the Golf in the North American lineup, but I guess we can only dream…
