The Updated 2020 Rolex Submariner

The Rolex Submariner, a watch mostly unchanged for the last 60 ish years.

The first Rolex Submariner was released in 1953 at the Bazel Watch fair, with the sole purpose of being a dive watch. Now, most people who buy a Rolex will likely not be wearing it to go diving, but at the time that was Rolex’s intention. And let me tell you, they make a hell of a dive watch.

After the first Rolex Submariner was released, the Submariner date followed a few years later in 1969. This was a big step forward as it allowed the divers who wore them for what they were intended for, to continue to wear them on a daily basis as it gave an extra function. It also presented the opportunity for others who wanted a simple watch to now a watch you could wear with anything, and it gave you that extra functionality.

Now, Rolex released a new updated Submariner for 2020. With the new update, Rolex has added some size to the case, updated the movement inside, and changed the bracelet to add more comfort.

The size of the Submariner, (though not growing a lot) has gone from a 40mm case to a 41mm, that being said, Rolex reduced the size of the lugs to allow for a more comfortable fit even with the larger case. Along with that, the bracelet has the “Rolex-designed and -patented Oysterlock folding safety clasp” (which Rolex will tell you repeatedly is patented by them) which allows for up to 20mm of adjustment to make sure you get that perfect fit.

Inside, the Submariner has either one of two movements. For the Submariner we have the all new 3230 movement which has been released this year, and the 3235 movement for the Submariner Date. The 3235 is nothing new, but it has been updated with a new blue Parachrom hairspring, which allows for more robustness. Basically, Rolex is saying you can drop or bang your watch against something, and the hairspring should hold up to it. I still wouldn’t suggest doing so, but it’s nice to know that if you did, you should be protected.

With the new movement, the Submariner & Submariner Date, also offer a longer power reserve than they used to, jumping from roughly 48 hours to about 70 hours. Basically, the standard for newer watches in this day and age.

All in all, if you want a reliable, good looking, functional watch, the Rolex Submariner is an amazing time piece. The price is a tad outlandish (not that you’ll be able to get one new unless you know a guy) but, you’re not only paying for a name in this case. You’re paying for a company with many years of experience in the field of creating a top of the line watch.
