Why I Look Forward To More Electric Cars

Today I’m talking about the electrification of cars and why I’m so excited about it!

First, I want to start by saying, although I look forward to the electrification of the car, I do still very much love gasoline powered cars. I don’t think anything will be able to make up for loud, high revving engine noises, but electric cars do bring their own kind of awesome to the table.

The reason I thought about writing this article came after watching "The Smoking Tire's", video about the Porsche Taycan 4s. I find the video gave a lot more insight to what we can expect for electric cars in the future. Mainly with the fun Jetsons sounds it was making. Go check out the video if you want to know what I'm talking about. But, it's not only the sounds that I look forward to. I also look forward to the performance that these cars have and the technology that also comes with electric cars.

Let's get into the performance and then I'll talk about the tech. One of the major advantages that electric cars have over the regular, old school gas cars, is a low center of gravity. This is achieved by having the batteries across the main section of the floor in the car. Helping alongside that is the fact that the electric motors are fairly small and can be mounted lower in the front and in some cases the back of the car. And because the motors are smaller and you don’t have to run a bunch of tubing for either cooling or for air to move into the engine like a gas car, that means that the front of the cars can be made lower and smaller. Thus, giving the car a better drag coefficient.

So, what does all of that add up to? Well, it means that the driving characteristics of the car as well as the performance, whether that be hard driving, or driving on a highway, will be substantially improved.

This is where the technology aspect becomes really interesting for me. Because, as time goes on and more research is done, the better (or at least we hope) the technology becomes. What I look most forward to, like most people I would imagine, is better “fuel” economy for the electric cars. And, this is going to be achieved by finding better batteries to power the cars. These better batteries are going to get smaller, be able to charge faster, and most importantly last longer when driving. As for the lifespan, well that we will only be able to see when they come, but I can only hope that we will have to change them less often.

Now, can you get an electric car that will bring you the same distance as a gasoline car? The answer is YES! But, at what cost? Well, for example the Porsche Taycan 4s has an EPA rating of 203 miles or 326km. Now, that isn’t great, but those aren’t necessarily the true numbers. As Matt from The Smoking Tire has tested, he was able to get it all the way up to 276 miles or 444km, which is pretty good all things considered. But here is where it gets interesting, the Porsche Taycan starts at a price of $119,400CAD. Pretty pricey to just to be able to go roughly 450km on one charge. But what if we look at the Tesla model 3? That starts at $55,990CAD and will get you an EPA range of 403km, and from I’ve seen, that figure looks to be pretty accurate.

Obviously when comparing a Porsche to a Tesla, there are going to be many more factors as to why one costs $55,000 and the other costs $119,000 but that’s another discussion. I’m here to talk about electric cars in general.

Now, as much as electric cars make my tummy tingle, I still hope that we can keep some of the gas engine cars around for a little while longer, and I know that will be the case, and I probably won’t see the most of the population with an electric car in my life time. But I do still very much look forward to seeing the technology improvements that are being made each day and the new cars electric cars that continue to be released.
